Today we have Neil Young's 32nd studio album Psychedelic Pill. Released in 2012, it is a collaboration with Neil's regular backing band Crazy Horse, who backed him most previously on his 31st studio album Americana, which was released earlier the same year.
Admittedly,
Americana wasn’t for everyone but this collab with Crazy Horse is. “Ramada Inn” is the best Neil Young song since the ‘90s and stands against his best work. “Drifin’ Back” is a good song, although not good enough to listen to for 27 min--at least not often. Same goes with the 16 min "Walk Like a Giant" which has a 4 minute outro that could have been removed entirely. But "Born in Ontario," "Twisted Roast," and "She's Always Dancing" put me in a forgiving mood and any song on
Psychedelic Pill would have been a highlight on a Neil Young studio album from the 20 years preceding it (not counting
Americana and
Harvest Moon).
