Today we have John Prine's third studio album Sweet Revenge. Released in 1973, the album is often considered one of his best releases. The album cover features Prine in the car that he bought with the royalties he received from his first album.
As much as I enjoy the inexperience which translates to charm on his debut, I'm glad Prine has released an album that's just as excellent by reflecting the maturity and confidence of his singing in addition to his gift for songwriting. The marriage of the two leads to his hardest emotionally hitting song yet "A Good Time," whose focus on everyday life of everyday people is reflected all across the album like on "Grandpa Was a Carpenter." Although the topics on "Christmas in Prison," "The Accident (Things Could Be Worse)," and "Dear Abby" could have been on past albums, their lyrics also show a slight growth in maturity, which fits well with Prine's first time on electric guitar and the bad boy cover. More proof he's changed: he got kicked off Noah's ark. A- [Later: A]
