Fleetwood Mac's debut studio album Fleetwood Mac was released in 1968. Because the band would release a more famous self-titled album in 1975, this album is sometimes referred to as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. As previously stated, Fleetwood Mac was formed in 1967 by Jeremy Spencer and former Bluesbreakers Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood. The album is a mix of blues covers and original songs written by Green and Spencer, who sing their own songs. Spencer sings all the blues covers. Most contemporary and retrospective reviews are positive.
I was sure that by ditching Mayall and his subpar voice, Green's soaring guitar and the excellent rhythm section from which this band gets its name would make this album a home run, pure and simple. Vocalist and slide guitarist Jeremy Spencer, however, doesn't convince me the bat touched the ball. His songwriting is lame, his vocals are impudent, and his blues covers are trash--anyone who thinks covering "Hellhound on My Trail" on piano is a good idea already lost any sort of credibility. Fortunately, the arrogant schmuck doesn't play on any of Green's five tracks but other than on "I Loved Another Woman," Green doesn't show any of the spirit he brought to the Mayall record. C
