Fleetwood Mac's ninth studio album Heroes Are Hard to Find was released in 1974. It was their first album without Bob Weston and their last album with Bob Welch, who left the band feeling creatively drained. He would be replaced by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks on the next album. (Yes, we're almost there!) Despite the fact that the album generally receives both retrospective and contemporary reviews that are mixed, it once again had the best US sales of any Fleetwood Mac album up until that point, peaking at 37 on the Billboard.
Besides "Silver Heels"--probably the best song from the band since Kirwan left, which isn't a particularly high bar--the album's general lack of direction and weak songwriting is embodied perfectly in the disturbing cover art. C
